I know of a very well to do family that had six kids. As each kid turned 18 they would have a big dinner with all the birthday kid’s favorite foods. When the dinner was over the mother would quickly wash the plate and hand it to her husband. Pop would break the plate and quietly tell the kid, “this was your last free meal under my roof, what are your plans.”
It seems that was a family tradition going back 4 or 5 generations. Afaik the tradition carries on.

Waste of plates. What were the family afraid of? Did they raise their kids right or were they all lazy layabouts?
Inquiring minds want to know why such a rigid policy was needed.
