The man, who has not been named, allegedly walked on an unauthorized path to reach the summit of Mount Vesuvius at 1,281 meters, according to a spokesperson from the Carabinieri of the Forestry department of the Park of Vesuvius.

The spokesperson told ABC News he believes the man went on the unmarked path because tickets for visiting Vesuvius, which cost $2,500 per day, were all booked.

The guides immediately started moving toward the area and were able to come to the man's rescue after seeing him attempt to retrieve his cellphone, according to Carabinieri's spokesperson.

The guides also performed first aid on the man's minor injuries to his legs, arms and back.

According to Carabinieri's spokesperson, two other Americans, two Brits and one Austrian were with the American man who fell.

He is an honorable mention. True Darwin awards are awarded to fools who kill themselves in the process and remove themselves from the gene pool.

"...people of Pompeii would much rather have seen that view..."

No doubt.

About 40 years a group of us climbed up to the top. It wasn’t 2500 bucks either. We were part of a tour group though, arranged by the USO .

Entry fee was cheap when we hiked Vesuvius when I was a young’un, long long ago. I just looked it up: entry fee to the National Park is 10€.

The $2500 must be for a package tour or something.

What kind of fringe benefits come, with a price like that? 😃

A virgin to toss in?

Seriously, I guess transportation, hotel, guided tours of Vesuvius and Pompeii? I was just a young girl when I went with my family. We booked our own hotel, drove our own car, etc. I always felt sorry for the Americans on those tours.

Scoff at $2500.

You can do Pompeii and Vesuvius for like $125.00 from Naples.

So how are the Darwin Awards actually determined?

Nominees significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race in an obviously stupid way. They are self-selected examples of the dangers inherent in a lack of common sense, and all human races, cultures, and socioeconomic groups are eligible to compete. Actual winners must meet the following criteria:

Reproduction
Out of the gene pool: dead or sterile.
Excellence
Sublimely idiotic misapplication of judgment.
Self-Selection
Cause one’s own demise.
Maturity
Capable of sound judgment.
Veracity
The event must be true.
