The "closest" star is 4 LYs away. To put this distance in perspective, if you scaled the sun down to the size of a pea, Alpha Centauri, our closest stellar neighbor, would be 117 miles away.
Imagine two peas separated by 117 miles. These are the distances we are talking about.
