From what I understand, they didn’t ‘hack his iPhone’. There was a backup of the phone on his laptop. This is what they broke. I imagine hunter had a piss-poor password on it.

Re: 12 - Or no password at all. Encrypted backups (via a password) of iOS devices to local devices are optional.
