I have read The Personal Narrative of James O. Pattie of Kentucky. Pattie was a frontiersman and trader in the 1820s in what became the southwest United States. He describes encountering a camp of naked primitives, among the poorest and most wretched he had seen, whom he called the "grasshopper people" because of the main staple of their diet.
