I don’t know about VA, but in NJ where I lived until a week ago, a 77 year old would be excused from jury duty due to age and likely would not be summoned. I think the age limit was 75. If they were summoned, age gets them excused. The correct person was probably summoned and appeared.

At the time, my 82yo mother was on jury duty. All week she hadn’t been called up. Unfazed, my mom had a yughe personal problem, and needed to be excused from jury duty. The judge listened to my mom’s reason for being excused. Without hesitation, my mom was released. My mother had her 2:00 pm standing beauty shop appointment the next day!
Wise judge knew you don’t mess with 82 yo’s with standing beauty shop appointments.
