I liked the song and the video, but I wonder a little why it became such a cult and other songs no worse didn’t.

The classic Kinks live album “One From the Road”, they teased the first few chords of “Lola”, then Ray Davies announced, “We’re not going to play that one tonight”. Of course the audience moans, then Ray says, “Ok, we’ll do it.”

80’s bubble gum pop. It was an MTV staple. Back when MTV played music video’s.

It was that part of the 80s, as David Lee Roth said, when "The music smiled, the clothes smiled, and the people smiled."
