Many of my neighbors on the Southwest Side of Chicago came here in the 1990’s from Poland. They regard Ukraine as an enemy for stealing the Polish city of Lwow. Lwow was once the 3rd largest city in Poland until the Russians occupied it in 1945 and gave it to Ukraine.
There is a lot of bad blood in that region.
“They regard Ukraine as an enemy for stealing the Polish city of Lwow.”
Poland should be angry with Russia.
On September 17, 1939, the Soviet Union declared all pacts with Poland null and void as the Polish state had ceased to exist, and the Soviets joined Nazi Germany in the occupation of Poland.
Book of interest: “From Lemberg to Bordeaux” written by Leo Leixner, a journalist and war correspondent, is a firsthand account of the battles that led to the fall of Poland which includes an eyewitness description of the Battle of Lwów.
In August 1939, Leixner had joined the Wehrmacht as a war reporter and was later promoted to sergeant. The book was originally issued by Franz Eher Nachfolger, the central publishing house of the Nazi Party.
Poles have pretty much gotten over it. They have been very accomodating for the Ukrainians who have come to Poland.
