How to get your baggage to come out first at the luggage carousel
Of course, this will never be a perfect science, but according to airport ramp worker and gate agent Thomas Lo Sciuto, there is one way to increase your odds of bag coming out first. He writes, “your best option is to be one of the last passengers to check your bags. Bags will always be loaded front to back on the bag carts, so if you check in last your bags will be in the last bag cart, which will make them the last on the aircraft, and the first off the aircraft at your destination.”
If being one of the last passengers to check into your flight causes you more agita than waiting around the luggage carousel, however, there is an alternative. According to Lo Sciuto, you can also bring your bag through security and then ask your flight’s desk agent if they can check your luggage at the gate. This will achieve the same effect of getting your bag an ideal placement on the undercarriage, thus making it first to hit the conveyer belt at your destination.

Hint of Logan’s Run.
Last flight back from the mainland with an empty rifle case, had to wait forever for it. Airline worke finally walk out with it, claiming it would not fit the luggage handling equpment.
I call bullshiite, all those damn golf club bags were longer and they came through.

Obviously. I worked back in HS for a cruise line and same thing applies. If you check in near the end, your luggage obviously goes to the front of the pile before shutting the door. I rarely check in luggage because I know full well, they might lose it and it’s only clothes. The MOST IMPT. is the HAND CARRY. Passports, documents, cash are a true hassle to lose.
I would rather be one of the first to check in. The later you check in, the more likely it is that your bag won’t make the plane. First and business class bags will get to the carousel before economy. If you pick an itinerary that does not include plane changes, you are much less likely to have a lost or misplaced bag.
It’s called a FIFO architecture in data handling circles.
oops LIFO
Back in my day they compared it stacking dishes as you wash them. The last one washed is one the top of the stack.
Yup, stack vs queue.
If I have to fly I travel light. That way my bag is always with me
NEVER check anything you can’t live without.
I check stuff I’m giving to the Salvation Army. That way I don’t have to wait at the carousel.
We don’t check bags
Precisely
As an experienced airline traveler, I called BS on this. While it is true much of the time I’ve seen luggage handlers go out of their way to load the carts backwards even from the middle out. This theory was going around the 80s. Nothing new I suppose.
By announcing this, and a lot of people start checking their luggage at the gate - they may start putting the luggage on the next flight. Cargo is balanced/weighed on the plane. They can’t have 50 people checking their luggage at the gate on every flight. Some people think they are so clever because they learned something - such as the author. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. After working at an airport for a decade - most people who did this were parents with strollers, or those who misjudged the size of their luggage. I certainly didn’t think someone had the nerve to announce sidestepping policy.
45 years of travel and how does this plan work with connecting flights? Your bag is going to get transferred to another aircraft so checking in a bag last has zero effect. Standing at the chute also is a pantload and has nothing to do with self importance. After being on the road for four weeks I stand at the chute some times and it only depends upon how many people are already at the carousel.
People like this are the reason America is damned.
Some airlines charge so much to check bags that it can work out about the same to ship your luggage by UPS.
I was on a two week trip once and my wife called to ask why I sent her a box of dirty clothes
