So, what, exactly, is CERN?

I thought it was short for Cernovich, the journalist dude. But apparently, it’s something else.

CERN = Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire (European Organization for Nuclear Research). They “probe the fundamental structure of particles that make up everything around us. [They] do so using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments.” The Large Hadron Collider is one of those instruments.
