Freya has become a local attraction, but Kragerø Mayor Grunde Wegard Knudsen of the Center Party told state broadcaster NRK that the town’s hospitality is wearing thin. That’s because the walrus has been plopping itself into boats, sleeping for hours on popular piers and blocking access to marinas because it can be dangerous to humans.
NRK reported that the large walrus also entangled itself in some tow ropes and had to be cut loose, and has damaged several boats. Knudsen, whose party has long wanted to shoot wolves and other predators, thinks the city now needs to rid itself of the walrus, either by moving it or killing it.
“I want to find a solution, so the professionals must offer the best one,” he told NRK, “either if it means capturing it and carting it away or, in the worst case, destroying it.”
Walrus steak. It must be good, the Eskimos have eaten for thousands of years.
