Our parents and grandparents, and we have had gardens for decades. This is the first time in over 60 years of marriage we have not had a potted garden (horse watering troughs with topsoil and a small drip watering system). My wife is recovering from hip surgery and her doctor and PT said not yet. We do have herbs near our deck to harvest when needed.
My wife came from the midwest corn belt country where the topsoil is about a foot deep and black as an Ace of Spades. They did the garage and SW side of their home gardening.
Relatives and friends left fresh veggies in their unlocked screened porch area. Meals often depended on what had been left or an open ended invitation to come to the neighbor’s garden and pick what they wanted. The women canned veggies before the frosts set in, usually about Halloween.
My maternal grand dad had about an acre of garden, where he planted & grew enough for their needs and to stock a self service produce stand. Customers paid cash or left some of their crops, no Zucchini.
My grandmother, his wife, raised chickens, sold the eggs and provided a lot of good frying or roasting chickens. Her chickens’ by products became fertilizer for her incredible strawberries and corn around the west side of her garden.
My Dad learned how to put a 3-5’ wide garden plot around our garages and raised veggies on 3 sides of the garage.
We put planter boxes out in apartment patios or balconies.
The joke here in California is to scatter the seeds on the ground, throw some dirt on them, water and get out of the way when things started growing.
