Construction spending figures arrived, sending GDP to 2.1%. Think about that for a moment, because there is more than one force at work. Inflation has increased the cost of construction, so what is being spent on construction is more. But inflation has also slowed demand for construction. That means a whole lot less is being built than if prices were stable. That’s less productivity for the amount of labor currently employed. The layoffs will begin soon and unemployment will skyrocket.
