Teachers who are expected to teach kids older than 5th graders SHOULD be expected to know a lot. They SHOULD have a grounding in serious math, science, etc.
For high school, I would do away with the concept of "ed major" entirely except for maybe a one semester summer "boot camp" in ed processes and procedures, and recruit from people who have degrees in the subjects they expect to teach.
If you are qualified to teach chemistry or history in the local community college, then you should be qualified to teach it in high school. I would go as far as if someone successfully taught a teach as an instructor in college, then he gets his high school license automatically.
I’ve often said that if I were Czar, one of the first things I would do is shut down all the Colleges of Education.
Heck, we used to do just fine teaching elementary school with high school grads, arguably better than we do now.
