Just think, some of my thirty-year-old code is still limping along on some NT systems around here.

I loved that feature as much as watching Jar Jar Binks.

I’m wondering if my 40 year old code (almost) is still powering a regional bank’s nightly processing.
IBM 30xx back in the day.

I’m a chemist by training. I started connecting laboratory instruments to microcomputers in grad school. One thing led to another...

You two have me beat. My oldest code still running is about 18 years old. Hard to believe my old team hasn’t had a reason to rewrite it all. They say the old code files are still being referenced in brand new websites when they have new projects.

Every now and then, I get an email because I used something for the Marine Corps Reserve ... in 1983-1984.
Sometimes I just respond and say, sure $150 an hour plus travel and hotel expenses paid up front.

If it was good code back 40 years ago why replace it.
Nightly clearing operations are exactly the same, the banks use exactly the same data providers.

I loved that feature as much as watching Jar Jar Binks. Well, most of us changed the avatar from Clippy to something else. I picked "Links" the cat.

I don’t actually know, for sure.
The 30xx was outsourced 20 plus years ago. Most of my Windows software was 1990s to early 2000 (tons of fun back then).
Now I push paper and am having to look for something else. My employer constantly tries to pound a square peg into a round hole and can’t figure out why people are not enthusiastic or leave.
They have stuff that would work better for me (and them) but the bureaucracy is stifling.

I agree.
If it works.........
I tried to rescue some coding disaster years ago. It was too much of a mess (AS/400).
Actually System 36 code. The locals couldn’t figure out what went wrong. And had no backups. Nor documentation worthy of use except maybe starting a camp fire.
Absolutely no concept (and no tolerance, either) for corporate I/T best practices.
I can only perform minor miracles. ๐
