I had a friend just like that. It seemed the older she got; the further to the left she moved.
I think with some increased age is when they start internalizing a growing sense of insecurity whether real or not. Their health and physicality changes. They see significant people in their lives pass, spouses, friends, societal figures. Their whole internal mental foundation as to how they interpret the world is shaken by this to some or to a major degree.
I saw it in my folks! Probably happening in me!
