One person died after an estimated 11-foot alligator pulled them into a retention pond Friday at the Myrtle Beach Golf and Yacht Club near Burgess, officials said.

Horry County Police spokeswoman Mikayla Moskov confirmed that HCPD's Environmental Services and Criminal Investigations divisions are investigating the death.

Moskov said Horry County Fire Rescue responded around 11:45 a.m. to the area of Excalaber Court, and "upon arrival, units determined that an alligator had taken hold of a neighbor and retreated into a nearby retention pond."

The victim was recovered from the pond, Moskov said. She added that a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources biologist and SCDNR-contracted alligator removal service determined that the 11-foot alligator should be euthanized.

Big difference. I am not saying kill all the cute fuzzy predators. I’m saying keep the human area clear of obvious risks. Especially alligators. They are especially dangerous.

If someone goes into a bear area they need to carry protection. The government should NOT pre decide the victors.

Again - people need to be able to decide how much risk they want in their area around them. Tourists getting run over by buffalo is ok with me. They went thre and chose that. A big cat, apex predator next to man (maybe bears) are not acceptable near or around kids / families. Giant lizards - no way I’m putting up with that near my area. Government protections are way crazy. City people have never seen a small steer run over a person. So go away. Your perfectly able to understand the balance for you. I can understand the risks I will take. No need for a giant lizard with teeth running around near people. Government artificially created the problem imho.

See my other post. That’s like saying - no reason to prevent violent crime, just solve it when it occurs. Your city folk. Maybe you think that subdivision isn’t city but it is. Predators can’t be dealt with only when they come for you personally. Their is a balance but it isn’t gators eating people at ease. Kill gators when they encroach on people. There can be areas you say “ your on your own”. Not in my backyard. Btw it’s a big backyard.

I agree with most everything in your post. What pisses me off though is when stupid people are themselves responsible for being mauled or killed and then some jerk uses that as a justification to hunt down and kill predators.

I admit I’m pretty much against killing anything except for food or population control. The exception would be violent criminals. The more of them that are killed the better for everyone one on the planet!

By the way, the most dangerous predators on the planet wear shoes, so that’s something to think about.

Son, I live on an 86 acre farm on top of Big Savage mountain in the Allegheny mountains of western Maryland. In the last year I’ve seen three black bears, a yote, and a Bobcat in the woods around my farm which borders 500 acres of public hunting land Does that sound like city to you? The nearest town is 10 miles away and when there’s more than four cars at the only stop sign, people here consider it a traffic jam! So now, where is it in ‘Bama do you live?

Golfing dude probably wandered over to the pond to take a leak and pissed off (or on) that gator. So it served him right! Gators gotta eat too, you know!

You let nuisances bears eat your grand kids? Or will you kill predators before they eat the people you love. The government + city folk made the gator problem worse. If you live in the country why are you busting my balls. You know when a raccoon or possum OR bear or lion is an issue. Can you imagine if every water body had big gators in it. WTF do you not understand then?

No need to worry. These sharks will move on. You a self declared country boy and know about dogs killing chickens? No wait until they attack them do something. That’s the plan. Good deal. Let me know how the city life works out since you lived on your daddies safe farm. Lol. Idiots to the left of me, idiots to the right, and idiots in the center ….

Son, my daddy lived to be 97 years old but he never saw or set foot on my farm. Now since you’ve changed the subject to avoid having to say something half-way intelligent about killing predators, what else do you want to yak about?

Fuc you the gators killing people. They need to be controlled. You advocate for more gators eating people. You lose. Hope your grandpa gets dragged into a shallowed pond by a gator so you can tell us all the gator was just doing it’s thing. I won’t mention your kids or grandkids. Too many gators in all the wrong places. Unfortunately it isn’t in your city apartment complex. The few places I would want them. So fO you idiot. Never respond to me again. You go hug the gators. Love them, kiss/hug them and by all means give them human qualities for survival. Crazy gator lover. Dumb azzz.

At least a moron is smarter than an idiot.

And even morons know better than to tolerate dangerous predators near their homes. An idiot trusts to luck and an overworked guardian angel with bears or gators in the backyard. We morons prefer more tangible means.

As for sharks I believe the people of the Orient have a recipe.

People who insist on entering area fully knowing the risk of attack by predators yet take no precautions are a special kind of idiot.

Relocation is expensive and created it’s own set of problems.
Unless a great distance is utilized the animals will return.
You’re introducing a wild card into the targeted relocation area. Disturbing the existing natural balance.
Also ask ranchers how well wolf reintroduction and relocation work for them.

I’m glad to see you now taking MY SIDE of the argument about predators! Bottom line — they won’t eat anybody who’s not dumb enough to offer ‘em a bite!

Wildlife are not your ‘friends’....

Brother took video of two BlueJays attacking a Falcon trying to get to their eggs. Amazing how those birds dive bombed that falcon - screeching the entire time. Falcon finally gave up.

Ineresting factoid.....

A bull alligator who has just reached maturity can average out at about 20 mph. At this stage in its life, it’s about 8 feet long and weighs about 250-300 lbs.
