Child impaled by catfish during Florida fishing trip

A child under the age of 10 was rushed to a hospital on Monday after being stabbed in the chest by a catfish.

The child was impaled by catfish spines during a fishing trip in Florida, Pasco County Fire Rescue PIO Corey Dierdorff confirmed to The Sun.

The incident happened in New Port Richey. Fire officials said as the child’s mom was taking the victim to a nearby hospital, the youngster experienced shortness of breath.

After the mom called 911, firefighters with Pasco Fire Rescue responded and listed the child as a trauma alert.

The young victim was then flown by helicopter to St. Joseph’s hospital in Tampa.

Dierdorff said the child remained in stable condition at the hospital.

He noted that it’s unknown whether the catfish was venomous.

Pasco Fire Rescue took to Twitter to share footage of the helicopter transporting the child.

Replying to another Twitter user, Pasco Fire Rescue explained: “The child was stabbed in the chest by the catfish’s stinger.

“The stinger entered the chest cavity approximately 1-1.5 inches and caused shortness of breath. We are hoping for a speedy recovery.”

Speaking to WTSP-TV, Dierdorff called the child’s situation “very odd.”

He told the outlet: “I’ve never heard of something like that.

“You hear of fisherman that might be cut by a barb or hit in the back of the leg and get an infection, but never heard of one penetrating the chest.”

I suspect the child was leaning over the fish to take a close look at it when it suddenly flopped up with the spike entering the child’s chest.

Who knew there were venomous catfish?

Most anyone who goes fishing for catfish. If you don't know at first, you'll soon find out.

“the patient in the next bay came in with a catfish stuck on his foot by the barb. I don’t know why he didn’t cut the fish off and just have the barb attached before he arrived. My brother said he thinks every doctor and nurse in the hospital had to “consult” on that treatment (i.e. look at the fish on the foot).”

Read online a story by a guy who was offshore fishing and got a large hook stuck thru his foot just after getting it out of a fish. Was not coming out without medical help.
Doctor at ER looks at foot and how thick the hook was, how big the barb, how thick the eyehole for the line, etc.
Calls up janitor and has him bring in a large pair of bolt cutters. Dr. starts to position cutters to remove barb etc. Guy looks at cutters with grease etc. on them and asks about sterilizing. Dr. says “you just injected yourself with fish guts and you are worried about a little grease?”

All of them are. Their fins are hollow. THEY have poison in them. You learn to stay away from the fins after the first time they fin you.

That is what it sounds like, a dorsal fin bone. The whiskers couldn’t do that.

The ones they catch while noodling are freshwater catfish, usually big females guarding their nest holes. Not fierce just really slippery.

It usually happens when they’re flopping in the bottom of the boat while trying to pick them up and throw em in the cooler.

When fishing in the Gulf, we always threw the hardhead cats back - but yeah, getting them off the hook is when the trouble starts. Once, I had one flip upside down and shake off of the hook as I was reaching for it - he fell inverted and stuck me in the outside of my calf. Made a real bloody mess out of the boat.
