The AG of North Dakota has taken action with a inquiry after billionaire Bill Gates’ latest farmland purchase.

Bill Gates acquired six parcels of land in Pembina County. Tuesday, the office of the Attorney General sent out a letter asking the Red River Trust to confirm how the company plans to use the land and if it meets any of the exceptions to the North Dakota Corporate Farming Laws.

Agricultural Commissioner Doug Goehring said “I’ve gotten a big earful on this from clear across the state, it’s not even from that neighborhood. Those people are upset, but there are others that are just livid about this.”

Per the DailyCaller “the letter stipulated that under North Dakota law, there are “certain limitations on the ability of trusts to own farmland or ranchland.”

“The Corporate or Limited Liability Company Farming Law has certain exceptions, such as permitting registered family farms or allowing the use of the land for business purposes,” the letter writes.

Those in violation are subject to a civil fine of $100k the letter states.

“Our office needs to confirm how your company uses this land and whether this use meets any of the statutory exceptions, such as business purpose exceptions, such as the business purpose exception, so that we may close this case and file it in our inactive files,” the letter adds.

If I had tons of money and had the best advisors telling me significant inflation will be present for the foreseeable future, I too would be putting my money into hard tangible assets.

Cascade is Gates’ company. It been diversifying not only Gates’ personal investments, but also manages investments for the Gates Foundation. Farmland is a good hedge against inflation.

Cascade has been buying farmland for at least 15 years. Neighbors to this land, mostly in the southern US, have not reported anything I’ve seen other than typical farm management by known professionals in the respective areas.

There’s a right to be suspicious, but has anyone seen reports of anything unusual about Cascade’s management? Lot of FReepers out there who might see first hand what’s going on with Cascade land.

He wouldn’t care about crops that make a few hundred dollars per acre. Maybe he’s anticipating legal changes and getting into marijuana farming? Or maybe he’s just evil and wants to manipulate the food supply?

Reports say 2100 acres, around $13.5 million. Less than $6500 per acre. Seems reasonable for productive farmland in ND.

Bill Gates is the largest individual owner of farmland in the US. He did an interview once in which he said it is a hedge against a time when money has no meaning.

Not value. Meaning. Calories will always have meaning and value. Money gets printed with no backing and that challenges its erstwhile meaning.

Gates is diversifying away from money.

This has a tendency to raise land values, which in turn raises property taxes forcing farmers adjacent to the property to go out of business as they are forced to sell their land.

So he can have meat. And real crops not full of gmo crap.

Further its a large safety zone for him and if he has food and animal operations there hes protected by a bunch of extra laws a privafe property owner isn’t.

Yes. We are going through that here. People from out of state, moving to Texas and paying 2-3 times the recent assessment value. Of course you cannot justify that on productive value of the farm land. Those moving to small towns in Texas are looking for a place to weather out the financial storm we are in. But facing fertilizer, fuel and chemical prices skyrocketing in multiple numbers, it makes dryland farming in Texas extremely difficult to be profitable at all.

My brother and I are seeing that happen to land that we own. But the appraised value of local home values are up hugely, and they are selling. Even those which are badly in need of repair are selling.
