It doesn’t sound like you have much experience with Islam. The French are trying to keep that cancerous religion from making more inroads into their country than it already has. There are parts of north Paris around St Denis where the imans effectively run, you can’t walk the sidewalk without following their rules or you’ll be harassed. This isn’t about France trying to prevent freedom of religion, it’s about preventing Muslims from taking over areas and trying to force French citizens to conform to Islamic law.
