Don’t kid yourself. Russia is invading Ukraine for control of petroleum reserves and pipeline routes to Europe. The ethnic ownership arguments are excuses. The Soviet Union would not have failed and splintered if the Soviet leadership had built its economy around petroleum exports feeding the Soviet military. The new Russian leaders realize this, and they want the Soviet Union’s land back.
They have a nine-part plan, and Ukraine is part one.

Russian oil income just increased by almost 50%.
