Let's see....if I were playing basketball with my friends and a car load of idiots came by and shot us with paintballs, would I/we go after them to kick their butts?

Its not at all clear the guy who ended up dead was shooting anything.

“Kick their butt” does NOT equal “beat them to death”.

I suppose they might have gotten an unlucky shot in and killed the guy completely unintentionally, but that should be determinable by the coroner.
