This is India.

They largely let animals roam. Remember reincarnation, some people come back as animals, or lower forms die and rise up into animals.

That must be it. This elephant probably had a grudge on this woman from a previous life. A little unfinished business, as it were.

Some don’t even want to kill a flea, in case grand pa Adityavardhana had reincarnated into one.

I imagine incidents like this just reinforce those beliefs.

Ironic because of elephant worship.

Ganesha, one of the many Hindu deities, is their elephant god.

If they didn’t worship this god (and elephants as its incarnation) or believe that such animals were the embodiment of their ancestors, they wouldn’t let dangerous, wild animals run loose. It is a popular belief among the Hindus that having an elephant around brings good luck, in spite of them killing about 500 people per year and damaging lots of crops.

There is a simple reason we don’t hear about elephant attacks in the US: elephants are properly kept in captivity at places like the zoo. Of course, we don’t have elephants in the wild here like they do in India.

This is India. They largely let animals roam.

Also, India being India, they brutalize the animals, doing things like randomly stabbing them or dousing them with petrol and setting them on fire.
