When I came of age there were things you just did not do, no matter what. The stigmas and social penalties attached to doing them was too great for the vast majority of people to bear. Plus America was far more a Christian nation than it is today. Back then the notion of what God might think of one's actions seriously affected most folk's behaviors.
Not so today. In fact , the more vile, slutty, gross, thuggish, stupid, ignorant, undignified, criminal and boorish one is today the more they're generally seen as being "cool" and interesting.
