There is a good reason why they use the term "insurrection." Insurrection historically refers to an "armed" attempt to overthrow an established government. Just for the record, none of the protesters were armed with a weapon. Back to the point. They are hammering home the word insurrection because Section 3 of the 14th Amendment uses that term - nobody can hold office who is part of an "insurrection" (paraphrasing). The target is obviously Trump. It won't work in the long run in terms of preventing him from holding office, but you can bet on three things. (1) The Jan 6 House Committee will refer "criminal" charges against Trump to the Justice Department before the Republicans take over, (2) the Justice Department will bring criminal charges against Trump and get him in a court room as soon as he runs or gets the nomination, and (3) the media will have a field day through out it all.

Why did Speaker Pelosi turn down repeated requests to send the National Guard to prevent a riot?

As far as your #2, They’re not going to wait until he runs or is nominated, they will arrest him around 30 days before the midterms

“democracy came to the brink of disaster”
It was the stealing of a presidential election that brought “democracy came to the brink of disaster”, not the protest against the steal. And you’re right, this is all about the ‘rats trying to keep Trump out of the White House, complete with show trials not unlike the old Soviet system.

My one wish for 2023 is that not only actual conservatives win and purge RINOs but the first thing they do is make Trump the speaker of the house. One does not need to be a member of congress to be speaker. The left collectively going bazonkazoids (more than usual) will be a sweet sweet sight to behold

You can rest assured there is less than zero chance this will happen.

Do republicans have any response prepared for this show trial media event?

“... as lawmakers hope to show the American public how democracy came to the brink of disaster.”
If this was an honest report, it would instead be speaking of showing the American public how democracy is in the middle of a disaster, after the 2020 election was stolen by the Democrats.

The hearings should always be referred to by their correct name:

Another political clownshow.
The Dems spent years holding hearings, lying and spreading disinformation about Trump and the Russian Hoax, holding Impeachment hearings, etc.

I thought Sect 3 was removed by later legislation because it only addressed the results of our Civil War and the punishment of the insurrectionist states. It is therefore, defunct law.
And when you have video of the DC cops holding doors open to attract protesters inside, it’s not insurrection. It’s entrapment.

Trump isn’t going to be arrested. Its laughable.
Its never happened to other Presidents of the USA & it won’t happen to Trump.
These stories are for Anti Trump partisans who hate Trump so much, that they want him imprisoned.
Our side has had similar “dreams” when it comes to the Clintons & Obamas.
