The objects do appear to behave that way, but they are picked up as solid objects by numerous sensors simultaneously (and by pilots visually).

Furthermore, they engage in sensor jamming activity when detected and, in one famous case, shot off at unbelievable speed (disappearing from sight) and reappeared at a predetermined CAP (rendezvous) point after interaction with Naval aircraft.

It was waiting at the CAP point when the pilot and his squadron arrived.

In the case of the CAP point appearance, the object should have no knowledge of the location of the CAP/rendezvous point. That point was only known by the Naval pilots and their operations officers on board their aircraft carrier.
