There are drawbacks, no question. There are also benefits, like no dependence on an agent of conflict.
This explains why women outlive men by at least ten years. They have a group of close friends. They have book clubs. They have garden clubs. They have travel clubs. My father died young, in early 70s. My mother is nearing 100 and still very lively and healthy. She always had a lot of clubs (activities). He sat around and ate too much and watched tv all the time. They weren’t together that much because she rarely sat still and never overate. He had several heart attacks. Now she has moved to an independent living apartment and is still busy with all the activities. She was just too busy to take care of a big yard anymore. I can’t keep up with her. We did get her to stop driving a year or two ago. Although she didn’t have a wreck, etc. Everyone just thought it was ‘time’. Once he passed away she got to travel. No longer tied to the house to care for him. She has gone to Las Vegas, Hawaii, Alaska, etc... We wish she had done more traveling when he was still alive, just leave him home and GO!
He was never interested in activities, books, travel, etc. His inactivity literally killed him.
