A lot of good planting information. Sounds like sweet potatoes might be good for Texas now, even with 100 degree heat.

A small town, Vardaman, MS, west of my hometown grows a lot of sweet potatoes. That was a part time job for students decades ago, setting out the plants. A relative of my dad grew a lot when I was young. We love our sweet potatoes.

I hate sweet potatoes. I have hated them since being forced to eat “canned yams” at school lunch in grade school.

I’ve tried a couple times. The local rabits always eat the tops.

also, sweet potatoes are not so good to eat freshly dug
they should be allowed to sleep for a month after digging

A good baked sweet potato smothered in butter is one of my favorite dishes. I like them candied also with a little cinnamon sprinkled on. They are far better than school lunchroom quality yams . . . yuck. I don’t like those either!!!

You don’t grow sweet potatoes from eyes like you would with russets?

I love sweet potatoes. I can no longer grow them as they take a lot of room. These days my garden is not so big.
The leaves are also edible and delicious. IIRC I would sometimes feed the leaves to my pigs.

Sweet potatoes are a good way to grow a large amount of nutrient-dense calories in a package that will keep at room temperature for months. Good prepper food.

I have only grown them from slips. But the beauty of growing from slips is that you get a lot more "starts" from one sweet potato than you do from one irish potato.
