Michigan surpassed the 6 million vaccinated residents mark as the calendar flipped to 2022.
In the almost five full months since, the state has seen fewer than 235,000 individuals get their first COVID-19 shot, including almost 25,000 in April and less than 16,000 thus far in May.
Vaccine uptake has advanced at a crawl since late last summer, but the state still believes more holdout residents can be convinced to get a shot.
After spending more than $77.6 million in state and federal funds for its vaccine advertising campaign in 2021 and the first quarter of 2022, Michigan has earmarked another $9.5 million for the months April through June, according Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) data requested and obtained by MLive.
“There is much more work to do in the area of encouraging Michiganders to get vaccinated,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s chief medical executive.
“When we look at age group and racial and ethnic background, as long as we see this heterogenous uptake in vaccines across the state, and as long as we see that we don’t have equity, and as long as there are groups out there who perhaps are not getting the full message and who perhaps are not getting all the information they need — until then I think we’re going to keep trying.”
