“Explain please, or should i just duckduckgo?”

No need. Way back when, recruiters, HR and managers wanted to know what your experience was. Do you know this? Do you know that? So we got jobs based on our experience. Then, all of a sudden, it wasn’t the experience that managers were looking for. It was whether you had a degree. This meant you could be trained.

I’ve been in IT for over 35 years, pretty much serving in every role possible with the exception of CIO. Worked for fortune 100 companies, traveled the world, built countless data centers, wrote applications, was a systems engineer, project manager and now, as I wind down my career I am in operations. I do process improvement and oversight.

The last few years changed everything in IT. It’s no longer what you know, but what “value” do you bring to the organization and what separates you from the other candidates?

Value Stream Mapping is either a singular or multi matrixed activity which looks at existing or even new processes from an end to end perspective. By doing this exercise, you can find gaps and other inefficiencies which then can be dealt with. The goal is to maximize efficiencies and optimize each step of the process prior to automation. It is part of something called ITIL 4. (Information Technology Infrastructure Library). In ITIL 3, the focus was on different stages of putting something into production and how to improve on it. ITIL 4 looks at everything from a value statement. ITIL is a framework that is sort of a service management wrapper for anything that goes into a production environment.

“Value-stream mapping, also known as “material- and information-flow mapping”, is a lean-management method for analyzing the current state and designing a future state for the series of events that take a product or service from the beginning of the specific process until it reaches the customer. Wikipedia”

What’s happening today is the word “value” is the key driver for people looking for jobs. In looking at the original post, the person said he was out of work since 2018 and looking at his profile, he is a tech writer. A tech writer who can perform value stream mapping exercises with customers is worth his weight in gold and I would hire that person in a minute.

The Team I presently lead has over 50 different processes in our Statement of Work. I did this exercise with my Team on several processes and brought in experts to get us started. It’s a great skill to have, relatively easy to learn and combined with things like ITIL, AGILE, LEAN, it’s a six figure salary and most of it can be done remote.
