There is a good book on this subject called rebel gold. It is several years old but the guy who wrote it has found a lot of gold. I have to say it is somewhat of a rabbit hole, the book had me searching out civil war Era newspapers and a obscure book called Jessie James was one of his names(some call it the treasure hunters Bible).
