Depeche Mode’s Andy Fletcher Dead At 60
Stereogum ^ | May 26, 2022 | James Rettig

Depeche Mode’s Andy Fletcher has died at 60. “We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher,” reads a statement that was posted on the band’s social media accounts. “Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint. Our hearts are with his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy in this difficult time.”

Fletcher was born in 1961 in Nottingham, England, and moved to Basildon when he was a child. It was there that he met future Depeche Mode founding member Vince Clarke. In the late ’70s, he started a band with Clarke called No Romance In China; after meeting Martin Gore, they all formed a different trio called Composition Of Sound. In 1980, Dave Gahan joined the group and they changed their name to Depeche Mode.

Though Clarke would leave the band after the release of their debut album Speak And Spell in 1981, Fletcher continued as an active member, playing keyboard throughout their entire career. Along with Martin and Gore, he released 17 albums with Depeche Mode, the most recent of which was 2017’s Spirit. He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2020.

Enjoyed New Order, Howard Jones, Men Without Hats, Art Of Noise, Thomson Twins, Human League, Heaven 17, Blancman

All one hit wonders, the best song of the above list was "Thomson Twins" and their song "Hold ME Now".

All I remember from Depeche Mode, was "People are People".

A one hit wonder from the MTV era.

No thread about Ray Liotta?

Not one, but several.

Saw them in Concert in LA. Must have been late ‘93 or early ‘94. Good stage show.

Thomson Twins had more than one hit. “Hold Me Now”, “King for a Day”, “Doctor Doctor”, “Lies”, and “Lay Your Hands on Me” all come to mind.

Also, Depeche Mode had a lot more than just one hit in the USA.

Thanks for the heads up. I've defiantly heard them before, just didn't know who they where. I can listen to their catalog on my road trip from Mississippi to Detroit Saturday morning. :)

"Hold Me Now" was their biggest hit, and "Doctor Doctor" was a secondary hit, and after that they went into MTV 80's oblivion.

I think Bill Bruford is still alive. It was Alan White who replaced him as drummer for Yes that died today.

I think it was Alan White, the second Yes drummer, who regrettably passed away today. He will be sorely missed.

Unless I’m very wrong, Bill Bruford, the original Yes drummer, left the band in 1972 after recording the album “Close to the Edge”, joining King Crimson.

Alan White succeeded Bruford behind the drum-kit in Yes, and he held tenure of no less than half a century within the band.

Godspeed, Messrs. White, Liotta and Fletcher :-(

Depeche Mode I often got mixed up with Tears For Fears. Both seemed grim, stylish and sophisticated.
