Why didn't they just stick with the original US WWII style? They are. They are pretending to be Army Air Corps B-17 pilots whose headphones would crush their lids.

They are. They are pretending to be Army Air Corps B-17 pilots whose headphones would crush their lids. You are not looking closely enough. My grandfather was in the 8th Air Force during WWII. I have an authentic "crusher hat". The new hats do not look like the old hats... They look like WWII Stalinist Army hats. The eagle on the old hat goes from the visor all the way up to the top of the hat. The army added about an inch and a half of extra height to the front of the hat.
Look at your picture and compare to the pictures on the army webpage.
