The first reaction is “such surprise at how different it is from the Disney version—and how much they prefer the original version. That's typical of Walt Disney. He would take a classic story like Felix Salten's Bambi: A Life in the Forest and proceed to make hash of it. I loved the movie Bambi when I saw it as a kid. But when I saw it again as an adult, I absolutely hated it for the way it distorted the original story.
By the way, if you want to read Bambi, read the translation by Whittaker Chambers--yes he's that Whittaker Chambers--from 1929.
