I agree ... Howard did nothing wrong--in fact, he was trying to do everything right. And in those last few minutes, he got to ask Jimmy and Kim (calling them "Leopold and Loeb" is perfect) why did they go through all this planning?
It was just the thrill.

The framed painting. Jimmy and Kim used the back of it to plot Howard's demise. Howard's brains ended up splattered on the front.
More disturbing, Jimmy kept the painting. It was in his playboy mansion at the beginning of the season.
