I don’t think the war in question is the Spanish Civil War because they sing of crossing the Rio Grande and not the Rio Bidasoa. So it could even be the US Civil War.

Good point. I guess it's just kind of a BS song.

On the other hand "Rio Grande" just means "big river." There's only one Rio Grande in the Spanish-speaking world?

Not sure if there are other rivers by that name, but they don't all agree on the name of the one we all know about. The Mexicans call it the Rio Bravo (wild river).
