We have two cats who were born and raised in a barn

Same here. Those two tabbies happily take care of the barn vermin. But they are vulnerable to roaming tomcats, who beat them up, eat their food, and pee everywhere in the barns. So we make sure that any tomcats are sent. . . onward. There is nothing good about a feral tomcat.
I think our dog runs off any other cats. He‘s free range but deeply bonded to us. Perfect farm dog.
