Japan's debt-to-GDP is 256%, exceeded only by Venezuela's 350%. Some of their political parties are: Liberal Democratic Party, Constitutional Democrat, Japanese Communist Party, Social Democratic Party

Japanese products have great core technology but where they lack is the “user experience” (UX) and the human/machine interface.

The waterfall engineering method works terribly for software. Sony could have been Apple, but they went over the waterfall.

But that was a winning strategy for almost half a century.

So the question is: If you are correct (and "all work / no play" leads to bad results), why did their model function so well for 50 years, and why did it stop functioning so well?

That is the real question.

OMG, are you seriously blaming women for male porn consumption?

I suppose sex trafficking is the fault of women also. smh

PS, Japan is not a “western” culture or society and they have a very long history of sexploitation of women.

When I was in college a gazillion years ago, I had job a retailer hawking a Japanese-manufactured video game console and games. I remember getting into a conversation with an older lady customer (she was probably like 40, but seemed ancient to me in those days) who turned out to be fellow conservative. At one point, she said, “It disgusts me to buy my kids all this electronic junk from the Japanese. My father fought them in the war. It’s a shame that a company like Apple Computer can’t make the stuff the kids want.”

That conversation always stuck with me, particularly when Apple started succeeding in such a big way.

I’m not blaming women. I’m just stating what is known about the known causes of why men use porn.

A men who perceives himself as loved will generally not use porn.

Are you satisfied with that simple statement or do I need to write 17 pages for you covering every single possible nuances, in order to completely close the circle on men and porn use?

Don’t do it, Japan.

The weaker sex is the master at passive-aggressive blame shifting. The purpose of androgens is to make men go crazy. Nature is forced to make everyone go temporarily insane for mating purposes. So is the sex industry mostly evil men exploiting defenseless women, or easy ride seeking women exploiting men gone crazy?

I worked for a very large Japanese company for over 5 years. Couldn’t deal with their cultural crap, so left them to work for an even larger Japanese company. Cultural crap and work ethics were worse there. 12 hour shifts, 6 - 7 days a week, no sitting down allowed, and hands in pockets were a sign of laziness. lights on walls tracked how fast you walk. More cameras than a casino recording every move throughout the plant, monitored by officials and used to fire workers.
No thank you ! Quit them after 5 years and will NEVER work for a Jap company again!

....very long hours, no vacation, no questioning authority....

I have to think that some of this is at least partly responsible for some of the very weird sexual proclivities of Japanese men (e.g., marrying avatars/robots, odd fetishes, etc.)

I do work for a large Japanese company and they are very resistant to replace any process. It is a world where on tiny improvements to one thing at a time are allowed. When big changes happen they so bend over to make it mimic existing processes advantages are minimized.

Yep. When men don’t have female companionship, due to most women disdaining “average” men in favor of chasing the same small group of desirable men, then the men who aren’t in the small group of desirable men turn to other ways of getting sexual satisfaction.

And then when the women hit their 30s and find that desirable men don’t want to even have one night stands with them any more, they find that the leftover men have gotten used to life without them.

In my early 20s I was lucky enough to find a girl who didn’t play those games, and we’ve been together 40 years.

Yep, a man whose woman keeps him satisfied doesn’t need porn. If your guy is using porn, that’s a clue.

I expect to hear some feminist shrieks on that one.

It isn’t even the sexually satisfied, unless she is denying him deliberately.

Most men’s love language is sincere love and respect. Most men would give everything to their wives if she is really giving that to him and not just playing a role, such as outwardly being loving and respectful but tearing him down when she’s out with the girls.

After the war, Japan had nowhere to go but up, they were highly motivated to rebuild their society, perhaps kind of their way of striking back against the country that “humiliated” them in WWII.

This is your reply to my question: If you are correct (and "all work / no play" leads to bad results), why did their model function so well for 50 years, and why did it stop functioning so well?

Your "answer" still doesn't answer the question: Why did it stop working so well?

This seems odd to me as they were able to optimize their manufacturing processes (vs. Americans)

I do think their work culture is odd, having seen it firsthand. In a Japanese office, everyone sits at one big table, with the boss as the head of the table. So everyone can see & hear everything. No cubicles, no partitions and certainly no private offices (except for senior leadership). The lack of privacy would drive me crazy.

There is also the forced socialization after work (going out to Karaoke and drink with your coworkers). By the time you get home, you are absolutely exhausted with no energy except to bathe and go to sleep (which also explains the low birthrate). I know one Asian who gave up a very high paying career to come to the US and escape all that.
