When it comes to America's food supply, leftist ideals clash with reality

The illogical leftist mind contradicts its own ideas without a care for their destructive nature. On the one hand, the greenies want everyone to eat a plant-based diet because meat and milk from animals are evil. On the other hand, they want to eliminate commercial fertilizers and return completely to "organic" agriculture. See any problems with these two disparate goals?

Fertilizer shortages are making news these days, and not just here in the USA. Of course, the shortage is being blamed on our catch-all, ubiquitous "supply chain" issues and Putin, especially since many of these products are made of components from overseas.

SNIP

Samantha Power says she's happy about it, as she told George Stephanopoulos, because the shortage will help us move toward "natural" agriculture.

In Sri Lanka, in April, the national government decreed that the country would return to 100% organic agriculture. It banned fertilizer imports, but then reality set in. Sri Lanka has now partially rescinded its decree because dire results were predicted — a 43% diminution in crop yields. Sri Lanka's economy is agrarian, reliant on producing staple food crops like rice and maize to feed its population. It had to pivot because human needs bumped up hard against fervent idealism.

The move to organic farming holds great merit, but it must be carefully accomplished. It's not a quick fix, and, certainly, it's not cheap. I have seen what careful soil-building gardening can do and happily witnessed how one family took a rocky, clay-strata hillside and carefully nurtured it to become a magical, productive kitchen garden. It took years of patience and care, including a generous annual application of carefully aged manure.

Yes, manure. You know, the stuff cows, sheep, goats, and chickens produce naturally. The same cows, goats, and sheep we milk and eat.

Leftists don’t value fertile soil because their food comes from the back room at the grocery store.

I love animals. They’re delicious.

they dont like crops either though, because it creates a monoculture that most animals can’t live in.

The left hates everyone and everything, but mostly themselves.

The move to organic farming holds great merit

Nonsense...its a huge step back. We had “organic farming” for millenia and people regularly starved.

The science says direct application of organic chemicals is the most efficient way to increase yields. The science says that...because its true and proven. Couple that with the judicious use of weed supressants and pesticides and pretty soon your acreage is feeding the entire planet.

But hey...lets throw all that away. We can just use unicorn poop and sing to our fields.

Investigating these fires that are destroying food plants and discovering how and why they start is critical. If this is a deliberate plot it must be uncovered and the guilty parties brought to justice. If they are not deliberate we must fireproof our food supply. Either way doing nothing is not an option.

Leftist ideals clash with reality

There’s your headline, why single out food supply?

When President Trump restores the oil and gas pipelines, he should include a third pipeline system: fertilizer slurry.

The FS pipeline already exists, sending fertilizer throughout the US, but it is both outdated and could be expanded several fold.

They tried all organic farming back in the 1970s.

In Cambodia.

There are other considerarions besides short term yield by weight.

Even slightly too much direct application of fertilizer salts slowly damages organic soil structure which results in greater need for water and more nutrients escaping the soil web every year. Which results in salts entering the ground water and eventually destroying lakes and streams. Proper control of salts and adequate rotation is a very exact science and often tilted toward slightly higher yield right now versus maintaining ecology. Why we have giant red lakes and toxic algae in many farm areas worldwide.

Inactive soil also reduces absorption of minerals and various micronutrients. Crops grown on salted soil maybe heavier yields and more water weight but often far fewer micronutrients pound for pound. Comparing the crystallization (brix) of juice from my veggies versus storebought is like night and day. Store is mostly water and little nutrients/flavor.

I’ve grown all my own veggies for many years and about 10 years ago I stopped fertilizer salts, tilling and irrigation. My yield per area increased every year and is now comparable or sometimes even more than modern farming. While soil quality and flavor continues to increase every year. The only thing I do to the soil is homemade compost on top 1-2 times a year.

While it can be succesful locally I do understand organic is not a 100% switchable solution for the food system as is now. Converting huge salted fields to organic takes many years to regain yields which many farmers cant afford.

There also simply isn’t enough organic compost because most people throw waste away. Returning most organic waste from faraway big cities to farms is not a trivial task. I compost all my own waste and return it to the soil just steps from home but most city people are terrified of even seeing garbage. And composting toilets? Fughedaboutit...
