It is fair to say that the oligarchs are more worried about their wealth than the Russian (or Ukrainian) people.

They are all allies and acolytes of Putin and even those who left on the outs with Putin owe much of their wealth to him.

When Putin leaves office (however that happens) it is possible that the next “Russian leader” will NOT be a Putinista. That leader will cloak himself in populism, blame the prior regime for all the troubles, and being for the people and he will go after the current oligarchs to recover their “ill-gotten gains” on behalf of the people.

This is what history tells us.

Actually history tells us the opposite. Someone worse will arise and blame the problems on western aggression. You’ll be fondly remembering the days of Putin trying to reach out a hand.

In fact we are going through it here at this moment. DC blames fuel prices, inflation and food shortages on Putin.
