I have met some Italians who do not consider themselves as ‘White’. They will say ‘I’m Italian.
Same with some people of Irish descent. They will choose
‘Irish’ as their race.
This may be due to both being treated pretty badly at the turn of the 20th Century, when it was accepted for employers to openly discriminate.

Yeah like Mike Tirico the sports announcer, everybody says he's "black" except for himself saying he's Italian.
