We asked our readers: How has getting an abortion — or deciding not to — changed your life? Here’s what they said.
Hundreds of thousands of women opt to get an abortion in this country every year. And that’s just what’s been recorded.
There are 600,000 abortions each year, on average, in the U.S, according to the CDC. The Guttmacher Institute, an abortion rights group, puts that number even higher, at almost 900,000.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, nearly two dozen states are likely to ban abortions or severely restrict access to the procedure. Thirteen have "trigger laws" that would ban abortion almost immediately, according to an NBC News analysis of data from the Center for Reproductive Rights. Whether abortion remains legal would be left up to individual states, forcing some people to travel out of state to legally end a pregnancy.
We asked our readers: How has getting an abortion — or deciding not to — changed your life? How has having access to an abortion clinic affected your decision? Here’s what they wrote to us. Some of the submissions have been edited for space and clarity.

So tired of this BS. So tired of this propaganda. The lying media is whipping up this issue with these totally one-sided sob story pieces. How ‘bout tales of adopted kids who are glad to be alive who thank their moms for not having abortions? But the ultimate lie here is the media narrative that the Alito opinion will outlaw abortion. No it won’t. That only happens if there’s the political will in your state to ban it. And if everyone loves abortion as much as the media says they do, then no problem, right?
“If abortions are so good for women why aren’t they free?” —Carol Everett
I feel my life would be better if Dred v Scott were reaffirmed and the 19th ammendment repealed..
Very /S
Bush and Cheney families tried to sneak Harriet Miers onto SCOTUS instead of Alito. Never forget that the neoCONS are not on our side!
I wish they did a poll of all the murdered babies in the womb..I wonder if they are happy they are dead..I bet NONE of them are..here’s an idea, dont want to get pregnant, no one is forcing anyone to get pregnant, keep your damn legs closed and you wont have anything to worry about
Is there a leak that Biden is going to confiscate ALL guns from citizens?
Let’s see if the press would run with that one...
No one is forcing anyone to get pregnant? I guess you have never heard of rape or even domestic abuse.
There are also many stories of regret. Will we hear of those? NOPE.
The more I listen to the news coverage of this leak the more I am convinced it won’t greatly help the democrats.
The entire discussion of abortion on demand up until the moment of birth is disgusting and off-putting. I don’t think many people have the stomach to think about it day after day for months at a time. Aside from those who are trying to justify their decisions and calm their guilty consciences.
Can’t kill your kid and have him too....except partial birth abortion you kinda can/can’t.
What? Did they stop making coat hangers?
There were stories of regret, and of gratitude that abortion was not available.
More fair minded and uncensored than I thought it would be.
NBC is Comcast — a multinational against America’s best interests.
Well you are. So..,,,
women do get raped despite that so many folks here don’t believe that happens.
If my girl gets raped, what then? Should she “keep her damn legs closed” if she’s threatened with a gun?
Or over powered?
If a woman is raped there is a medical procedure to assure there will not be a pregnancy IF she REPORTS it....and why wouldnt a woman report rape??
She should go directly to an ER that will do a wash that will assure no pregnancy occurs ...of course that would mean reporting the rape to authorities..
What medical procedure are you referring to?
“Do a wash?” You are clearly not a medical professional of any kind. What they will do is a 4-6 hour forensic examination, swabbing vaginal and anal areas and under the fingernails, collecting DNA samples, etc.
