Every owner of old properties with large storage basements in PA like to claim to be part of the Underground Railroad. Actually these large stone lined vaulted rooms were usually used to store either food or most often beer in barrels… which needed to be kept cool to extend the storage life of the brew. No one appreciates how important beer was as an everyday beverage in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

No one appreciates how important beer was as an everyday beverage in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

It's still pretty important to some of us.
