He could have been medically retired. Happens all the time. But yeah, he’d have been a fool to turn his back on $3K month disability retirement to fight in Ukraine. ...Or a man of conviction.

Likely not a contractor (aka mercenary) for weapons training due to the limitations and liability his previous injury would pose. No one wants to hire a broke-D for a war zone.

I would think the US weapons training is occurring outside Ukraine with UKR soldiers going there. The pay scales for providing that kind of support inside a war zone are top of the charts. Like $330K/year with max hours and bonuses. But who knows what Biden and State are paying for.

Willy Joseph Cancel, 22, was being paid by a private military contracting company to fight in Ukraine when he died on Monday, family members told CNN.

I have mentioned before a former ranger/sniper offered $80,000 a month to go to Africa as a “contractor”. He had been injured by an IED, had 27 surgeries, and a permanent Trach, but they wanted to hire him. He didn’t take the job, btw.
