If an issue is important to you, for whatever reason (curiousity is sufficient), do your won research. Find the raw, principle, first data - the stuff that everybody is spinning. Learn how to understand that (underlying) material, which is often papers filed in or issued by a court, or proposed legislation, EO, or similar.
This is time consuming work, so for everything else, just figure you are not well informed.
