Up until 2000, red was the out of office party and blue the incumbent. The protracted struggle Al Gore forced on the country led to states being tagged as Red or Blue. Reverting back for 2004 would have been confusing.

It’s doubtful anyone thinks Republicans are commies because their states are tagged as Red.

I don’t think calling Republicans “Red” confuses people with the communist application of the color either. Just like calling a man a woman does not confuse me. I remember. I have the memory of an antelope.
