So what's the mystery?
Plane took off from a local airport nearby, had trouble gaining altitude, stalled and augered in.
No mention of any mechanical trouble from the pilot, no weather factors, no other traffic to avoid.
My only question is: how overloaded was the plane?

The article states that witnesses heard the engine sputtering. Sounds like a typical loss of power on takeoff in a single.

Why would he ‘auger’ in? He should have been able to glide for a distance (depending on altitude) unless the pilot became incapacitated.
