You know it’s a strange world we live in when a controversial college professor known as a “space archeologist” gets in a Twitter spat with an actor best known for his role as a futuristic spaceship captain.
Welcome to 2022.
The issue between UAB professor Sarah Parcak arose when Shatner tweeted about his History Channel show “The UnXplained” and the episode “Mysterious Ancient Ruins.”
“Ancient ruins fascinate us. Some archaeological finds are so baffling that they challenge everything we know about the past. Will we ever learn the truth about these mysterious ruins? Or will they continue to present more questions than answers?” Shatner wrote.
The tweet prompted questioning responses from several archaeologists, including Parcak who invited Shatner to send her a direct message to “engage if you are interested in learning why the premise of the show is problematic.”
Parcak later added some additional tweets.
Shatner, who is known to be a vocal Twitter user, responded.
“For a “supposed” archaeologist (who didn’t get a gig on my show by your own admissions and the fact you are upset); you do not have any idea of etymology which is really puzzling. “Butt hurt” has its roots in punishment such as spanking a child not homosexuality dear,” Shatner wrote today.
It is unclear what Shatner is referring to in the “Butt hurt” comment but fellow academics were quick to defend Parcak.
“(Parcak) is not a “supposed” archaeologist any more than you are a supposed shill-for-hire. She has a Ph.D. from Yale and is a renowned Egyptologist,” one wrote.
The latest Twitter spat isn’t the first social media attention received by Parcak. Last year, the university condemned a Tweet from the professor in which she said conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh should have suffered until his last breath during his battle with cancer.
Is it a binary abacus?
I work with quite a few PhDs. They’re not as brilliant as they seem.
She’s a cupid stunt.
She’s the same one who made suggestions about how to topple statues/monuments when the BLM/Klantifa commies were going around destroying them. If she were hit by a bus tomorrow, the world would be a better place.
Actually UAB is more of a medical university they have a huge campus hospital complex (lots of buidings for various specialties) as well as having a good biotech engineering program among others. its a pretty nice place, but obviously with some weirdos. I think this prof is also the goon that posted how to take down a monument.
Very accurate description. Modern academic orthodoxy is as reactive to challenges to its dogmas as the Church was during the 16th century. If universities could get away with public burnings of heretics there would be pyres on the campuses tomorrow.
Dr. Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1?
An oxymoron.
There was some anthropologist/ archeologists type who wrote a paper about how men lived in a segregated group from women and children and were feasting on meat etc while the women lived there n what the could forage. His reasoning was the bones and butchering of game animals was done at some distance from where the women and children were located. My first thought was if you processed the animals away from camp that was where scavenging animals would go reducing the possible of tribe members being attacked. That thought never entered his head.
In my world, that makes her even more suspect.
Oxygen deprived?
Mars is the only planet we know of populated entirely by robots.
Yes, but are you logged in?
... although the "beaded in" was very clever ...
I’ll take that as a compliment...
“She has a Ph.D. from Yale”
Probably in something that doesn’t exist
The way I see it is.. anyone can go into debt paying for a degree. It doesn’t mean it makes them smart.
