I recall hearing about that story. I’m not near Redding, but in the same state of California. Very early on, the Police thought they were dealing with a fake situation.
A lot of people on talk shows called them heartless.

because sometimes, depending who it is, they are very concerned about faking crimes, or even insinuating they are fake...

if its enemies or the wrong type or class of people, its a problem

otherwise it isn’t

and its basically the only types and classes of person you are allowed to legally discriminate against today
