A Louisiana pastor and religious school headmaster who is facing multiple charges for taping shut the mouths of five chatty 13-year-old students defended his actions and claimed the seventh-graders had bullied their teacher into tears.
John Raymond, 60, was arrested last Thursday and charged with three counts of cruelty to juveniles after the shocking incident at Lakeside Christian Academy in Slidell on March 18.
The former Survivor contestant took to the school's website Monday to blame the young boys for his actions.
The pastor said the students 'showed complete disregard' by constantly interrupting their seventh-grade class with non-stop chatter, but none of the five students suffered physically, he said.
He added that he was left no choice but to take action after the teacher had walked into his office in tears and made threats to resign over the students' behavior.
The students were then told to go to a hallway, where Raymond gave them two choices: To have tape on their mouths so they can remain silent, or to be suspended from the school, the statements said.
'The students all chose tape and I pulled off one piece at a time and carefully placed it over their mouths making sure I did not touch their nose or interfere with their breathing,' Raymond said. 'At no time was tape wrapped around any student's head.'
However, police disputed Raymond's version.
'Due to the fact the tape was wrapped around the students' head, it had to be removed with a pair of scissors,' Slidell Police stated. 'During the encounter, the students claim they had trouble breathing and that the removal process was painful.'

How many Freepers have had their mouths taped shut or washed out with soap and water?
My husband grew up in that neck of the woods and I would bet the farm every one of those kids were big mouths.
I was waiting for FReeper thoughts before I said anything.
When I was in school this kind of punishment was not allowed because one boy had his lip torn off by tape at another school so teachers used other forms of punishments.
With this said, I find it hard to believe this Christian school had only tape to use as punishment to stop the boys from “bullying” a teacher. I know these kids’ parents pay good money for them to be up at that school, how about a few phone calls to home?
How about giving each of them an old-fashion paddlin' in full view of the classroom?
The humiliation factor, alone, should not be underestimated.
Regards,
The purpose of discipline is to teach. Does it teach kids the necessity of listening to the teacher?
I attended a “Christian” school 7-12. The basic 3-R education was excellent; most everything else was poor to abysmal. Sometimes the Bible classes were taught by a P.E. teacher who knew less than the students.
It was on a mountaintop, in an old building not intended to be a school; there were rainforest-level rains and winds, with no internal hallways. (I spent half of every winter drenched all day long.)
Discipline was harsh, and they would suspend a student on mere hearsay about unwitnessed conduct off campus. There was no first aid, no career counseling, and no gymnasium. The science and technology equipment was minimal to non-existant (and I was an aspiring biologist).
I was once severely injured when a large oaf knocked me off a ledge: I was unconscious, with a broken arm. I was left alone for 7 hours; they were afraid of being shut down if they attempted medical treatment without proper staffing and accreditation. If I had sustained a concussion, I would probably have died. I did sustain permanent back and hip injuries from playing on outdoor unpadded concrete (not wood, not even asphalt) for six years.
In some ways, it felt like a daytime prison camp. The extended busing/commuting time cost me hundreds of hours in homework and social time over the six years.
My brother ran away from home after one semester. I was obedient, so I stuck it out.
I became an honor graduate, achieved more academic awards than anyone in my era, and my SAT/ACT scores were sufficient to gain me admittance to nearly any school - but I wish I had not been forced to go there (especially because of the cumulative damage to my body).
That school is now wealthy and famous, and has all the amenities - and necessities - that we lacked.
Paddling worked.
most teens should have their mouths taped shut anyhow, lol.
No the guy was wrong! Not his kids to tape shut.
But I get the sentiment.
In 1969, in preschool, I had my mouth "washed out with soap" for saying "poop head". It was horrific and I still remember it very well. If I ever find that witch still alive, I'm gonna unleash a string of "POOPY HEAD POOPY HEAD POOPY HEAD" invectives that she'll never forget!
Not the way to handle it.
I think there should be rooms where unruly kids are sent That room has desks spaced apart, and all the kid can do is his school work or read. They have to eat their lunch in there too.
Our district has “alternative school” a separate building that incorporates many of those ideas.
Lololol.
I hate suspending kids because they can go home and play video games.
Sometimes, boring is good punishment. Makes them appreciate the non-boring classroom.
I duct taped my step son to the carpet one day. It was very entertaining, but my daughters had a happy few minutes or hours.
Then they can misbehave in the other room to their hearts content? Corporal punishment works well, for kids who won’t shut up, send them to special education schools like when I was young. Let them find out what it is like to be outside of normal well behaved society.
